Vermiculite Information
The vermiculite mine in Libby, Montana, is perhaps the most notorious asbestos related mine in the country. It was found that because of its unique soil formation, asbestos was contained within the vermiculite mined. Many workers were exposed without their knowledge, as well as their families, and those with homes in the area. The mine was of course closed, and vermiculite throughout the world was tested for traces of asbestos. Many mines produce vermiculite without the dangers of asbestos. The Libby mine was unique because of its soil.
Vermiculite is often used in potting mixes. Some safety precautions should be taken when using a product with vermiculite in it.
Do not use the product indoors, try and handle it outside. By keeping the soil wet you are less at risk to release dangerous fibers in the air. If it does get in the air, or on your clothing, don't bring these clothes inside with you. You may want to consider using a different soil product, such as bark.
