The Hazards of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos will probably be found in many products we still use today, and are usually perfectly safe, as long as they are in good condition, and well maintained and inspected. The hazard is inhalation, so preventative steps must be taken to keep these fibers out of the air.
If you know that there are asbestos products in your home, school, or work building, keep an eye out for the signs of wear, and damage. Tearing, water stains, abrasive areas, cracking, or dusty areas may all be signs of a problem. If you see this, don't touch it. Contact your local health department to have it evaluated. If a professional inspection uncovers a problem, it will probably be recommended to you to have the product repaired or removed. Again these steps should be taken by a professional who is trained in asbestos maintenance and safety. Even with good intentions, removing or repairing a problem yourself, could release the fibers into the air, putting your health at risk.
