Handling an Asbestos Problem

If you think you may have an asbestos problem at work, home or school, it is very important to not disturb the area of concern, and call a professional trained in asbestos repair and removal. These individuals have experience, and training in safety that will keep the risk of exposing more dangerous asbestos fibers low. The easiest way to raise the level of asbestos fibers in the air is to disturb a problem area of a suspected asbestos product.

Assess the area. If the asbestos product that you are concerned about is relatively in good condition, than don't do anything. Some things to watch out for include, homes built between 1930 and 1950, cement roofing and siding shingles, some vinyl sheet and flooring, manufactured fireplace logs, and cement sheets found in woodburning stoves.

When you have someone come to manage your problem, they will either repair or remove the asbestos. Repairing usually involves sealing it off. This reduces the risk of fibers being put off into the air. Removing a problem is more intense, and risky, and requires a professional.
